Construction
This bare concentric-lay stranded conductor is constructed with a straight round central aluminum wire surrounded with one or more layers of helically-laid aluminum wires. These conductors are also manufactured as compact conductors if required.

Aluminium Conductor Alloy Reinforced (ACAR) is formed by concentrically stranded wires of Aluminium 1350 on high strength Aluminium-Magnesium-Silicon(AlMgSi) alloy core. The number of wires of Aluminum1350 & AlMgSi alloy depends on the cable design. Although the alloy strands generally comprise the core of the conductor, in some constructions they are distributed in layers throughout the aluminum 1350-H19 strands.

AAC (1350-H19), AAAC or ACSR conductors, concentrically stranded. Available with black or gray track resistant, high-density polyethylene (HD) or black track-resistant crosslinked polyethylene (XLP) covering. Covered conductors consist of stranded hard drawn aluminum conductors with either one, two or three extruded layers depending on the voltage rating.
In a Covered Aerial MV System (formerly called Spacer Cable), spacers hold three MV phase conductors in close approximation. The spacers are suspended from a high-strength messenger wire. Covered Aerial MV (CAMV) cable itself is a single aluminum conductor protected by a layer of track-resistant polyethylene.

The AW core, which consists of a thick layer of aluminum (approx. 10% of the nominal wire/radius) over steel, gives ACSS/AW conductors the advantages of standard ACSS along with the light weight and good conductivity of aluminum and the high tensile strength and ruggedness of steel. ACSS/AW can operate continuously at high temperatures (250°C) without damage, allowing for a significant increase in conductor current-carrying capacity. The cross-sections above illustrate some common stranding.

ACSS conductors are similar to conventional ACSR with some very important additional advantages. ACSS can operate continuously at high temperatures up to 250Ë?C without damage, allowing for a significant increase in conductor current-carrying capacity. ACSS sags less under emergency electrical loading than ACSR, it is self-damping, and its final sags are not affected by long-term creep of the aluminum.

AACSR is a concentrically stranded conductor composed of one or more layers of Aluminium-Magnesium-Silicon Alloy wire stranded around a high strength coated steel core. The core can be of either single wire or stranded multi wire. AACSR is available with steel core of Class A, B or C galvanizing or Aluminium clad (AW). Additional corrosion protection is available through the application of grease to the core or infusion of the complete cable with grease.

Aluminum alloy conductors have a number of advantages over the use of the ACSR or all-aluminum conductors.
1.Lower power losses than for equivalent single-aluminum-layer ACSR conductors.(The inductive effect of the steel core in the ACSR is eliminated.)
2.Simpler fitting than those required for ACSR.
3.Excellent corrosion resistance in environments conductive to galvanic corrosion in ACSR.
4.Strength and sag approximately the same as for equivalent 6/1 and 26/7 ACSR conductors.
5.Outside diameters are the same for standard ACSR conductors, permitting interchangeability of fitting.

Bare all-aluminum Conductors (AAC) are concentric-lay-stranded, consisting of one or more layers of wire wrapped helically around a straight round central wire. Each successive layer has six wires more than the layer immediately beneath. Greater flexibility is provided by increasing the number strands for a specific cross-sectional area. The more commonly used strandings are 7, 19, 37, 61 and 91.
