Single row tapered roller bearings are designed to carry combined loads, i.e. radial and axial loads acting simultaneously. The projection lines of the raceways intersect at a common point on the bearing axis to provide true rolling action and therefore have low frictional torque during operation. The axial load carrying capacity of a tapered roller bearing increases with increasing contact angle ±. The size of the contact angle, usually between 10 and 30, is related to the calculated coefficient e: the higher the value of e, the higher the contact angle.

Tapered roller bearings are utilized in applications where there is a combination of radial and axial (thrust) loads. Tapered roller bearings are separable and have the following components: outer ring, inner ring, and roller assembly (containing the rollers and a cage). The non-separable inner ring and roller assembly is called the "cone", and the outer ring is called the "cup". Internal clearance is established during mounting by the axial position of the cone relative to the cup. It is important to note that tapered roller bearings are predominantly sold as individual components. Therefore, it is important to know the part number of both the cup and the cone, as they will most often differ and there are often many cup/ cone combinations available. While feasible to replace only the cup or the cone when replacing a tapered roller bearing, it is not recommended as it greatly decreases bearing life. Tapered roller bearings are used in numerous applications and are capable of high loads and speeds. The predominant use is in any wheel application, where the tapered roller bearings are normally arranged in back to back pairs where they support axial and radial loads in both directions. If either a radial load or bi-directional axial load is to be carried, a pair of bearings must be used in a "face-to-face" or "back-to-back" mounting. The axial load carrying capacity of the bearings is largely determined by the contact angle. If the contact angle is larger, then the axial load carrying capacity is higher and vice versa. During equipment assembly, single row bearings can be set to the required clearance (endplay) or preload condition to optimize performance.
