Single row tapered roller bearings are able to harness both radial and axial forces. The axial load capacity depends on the degree of the contact angle. These parts are able to control the axial load in one direction only and that is wht they are assembled in pairs. The axial clearance or preload designated in these pairs of bearings is to be adjusted during assembly. The amount of the axial clearance or preload is determined according to the following criteria: operating conditions, the size and type of the roller beaings, and the specific requirements of the mating arrangements rigidity.

Internal clearance is established during mounting by the axial position of the cone relative to the cup. Therefore, it is important to know the part number of both the cup and the cone, as they will most often differ and there are often many cup/ cone combinations available. While feasible to replace only the cup or the cone when replacing a tapered roller bearing, it is not recommended as it greatly decreases bearing life. Tapered roller bearings are used in numerous applications and are capable of high loads and speeds. The predominant use is in any wheel application, where the tapered roller bearings are normally arranged in back to back pairs where they support axial and radial loads in both directions. If either a radial load or bi-directional axial load is to be carried, a pair of bearings must be used in a "face-to-face" or "back-to-back" mounting. The axial load carrying capacity of the bearings is largely determined by the contact angle. If the contact angle is larger, then the axial load carrying capacity is higher and vice versa. During equipment assembly, single row bearings can be set to the required clearance (endplay) or preload condition to optimize performance.
