Brief Description: ;
Caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) is a versatile alkali. It is a white solid ionic compound consisting of sodium cations Na+ and hydroxide anions OHâ??. Sodium hydroxide is a highly caustic base and alkali that decomposes proteins at ordinary ambient temperatures and may cause severe chemical burns.
Main Uses/ Industry :
" Caustic soda reacts with bauxite to dissolve aluminium-bearing minerals in the ore so that insoluble impurities can be separated. The purified alumina is then used to produce aluminium.
Caustic soda is commonly used as a reagent in chemical reactions.
Caustic soda is used in the saponification reaction to manufacture soap. In detergents, it is a part of the process of neutralisation of LAB.
Caustic soda solution is used in the exploration, production and processing of petroleum and natural gas. It is also used as an adsorbent for carbon dioxide in light petroleum fractions; a treatment step in removal of various sulphur compounds.
Caustic soda solution is used in the pulping and bleaching process and de-inking of waste paper.
Caustic soda forms an important input in the steel industry. It is used to clean steel.
Caustic soda solution is used to process cotton and dye synthetic fibres such as nylon and polyester. Mercerising of fibre with sodium and hydroxide solution provides greater tensional strength and consistent lustre. It removes waxes and oils from the fibre to make it more receptive to bleaching and dying. In rayon it is used during the viscose process to extract cellulose from pulp.
Caustic soda solution is used in the treatment of water by regenerating the anion resin bed. It is used on a large scale in DM plants."

TDI is an important intermediate in the production of flexible polyurethane foam. TDI is obtained by nitration of toluene. The hydrogenation of di-nitro toluene is then obtained to produce Toluene Diamine (TDA), which is in turn reacted with phosgene to form TDI. TDI is a clear, pale yellow liquid with a sharp, pungent odor. It is combustible only at high temperatures, but burns to produce toxic gases (cyanides and nitrogen oxides). It is volatile, producing toxic concentrations at room temperature.
Main Uses/ Industry :
" It is a vital raw material for flexible polyurethane foam, for use in cushions, mattresses, garments, pads and gloves and packaging materials.
It is used in polyurethane coatings for automotive refinishing, wood finishes, and high-performance anti-corrosion coatings.

Aluminum sulfate, a colourless salt obtained by the action of sulfuric acid on hydrated aluminum oxide. The commercial form is a hydrated crystalline solid.
Main Uses/ Industry :
" It is used extensively in paper manufacture as a binder for dyes and as a surface filler.
Aluminium sulfate is used in water purification, it causes impurities to coagulate which are removed as the particulate settles to the bottom of the container or more easily filtered. This process is called coagulation or flocculation.
As a mordant in dyeing and printing textiles - When dissolved in a large amount of neutral or slightly alkaline water, aluminium sulfate produces a gelatinous precipitate of aluminium hydroxide, Al(OH)3. In dyeing and printing cloth, the gelatinous precipitate helps the dye adhere to the clothing fibers by rendering the pigment insoluble.
In construction industry it is used as waterproofing agent and accelerator in concrete. Another use is a foaming agent in fire fighting foam."
