Rubia Cordifolia, often known as Common Madder or Indian Madder, is a species of flowering plant in the coffee family, Rubiaceae. It has been cultivated for a red pigment derived from roots.
Description. Sida cordifolia is an erect perennial that reaches 50 to 200 cm (20 to 79 in) tall, with the entire plant covered with soft white felt-like hair . The stems are yellow-green, hairy, long, and slender.
Despite serious safety concerns, Sida cordifolia is used to treat asthma, tuberculosis, the common cold, flu, headaches, nasal congestion, cough and wheezing, urinary tract infections, sore mouth, and fluid retention (edema).
Tinospora cordifolia (Thunb.) Miers, (Guduchi) is an evergreen perennial climber. This deciduous and dioecious plant belongs to the family Menispermaceae. .The plant mainly contains alkaloids, glycosides, steroids, diterpenoid lactones, sesquiterpenoid, aliphatic compound and other miscellaneous compound.

Madder is a perennial plant with evergreen leaves and small pale yellow flowers. The roots can be over three feet long, and are usually harvested in the second or third year of growth. Tinospora cordifolia contains many different chemicals that might affect the body. Some of these chemicals have antioxidant effects. Others might increase the activity of the body's immune system. Some chemicals might have activity against cancer cells in test animals.
In ayurveda guduchi is a part of the rasayanas (traditional rejuvenators and important daily tonics) category of ayurvedic plants. As per the charakasamhita, ayurveda’s primary text, it is a medhya rasayana or mental rejuvenative. The herb supports the normal function of the immune system by maintaining optimal levels of white blood cells like macrophages. The plant is also used in dyspepsia and various types of fever.
The stem contains alkaloidal constituents, including berberine and bitter principals, including columbin, chasmanthin, palmarin, tinosporon, tinosporic acid and tinosporol. These chemical constituents render the herb its therapeutic properties.
