The styrax benzoin tree is evergreen, and grows naturally in northern sumatra, indonesia. The tree yields an almond shaped solid gum resin called benzoin gum sumatra (cas number: 9000-05-9), collected from incisions made into the trunk of the tree. The gum resin is of high quality and has many commercial uses. Benzoin Sumatra is extracted from Styrax Benzoin and Styrax Paralleoneurus, which are native to the island of South Sumatra.
