How to Grow Plants in Coco Peat

Processed coconut fibers are the byproduct of the coconut industry which, without its usefulness to gardeners, would otherwise be disposed of. As a growing medium similar to sphagnum peat, coco peat, also called coir or coir dust, provides an alternative to potting soil featuring high water retention, suitable aeration and antifungal benefits. Coco peat is not only a natural, often organic product, but also a renewable one with a slightly acidic pH that many plants prefer to grow in.

Tip
Don't throw away old coir used in planters. Dig it into your garden to condition the soil.

All seedlings benefit from hardening off, whether they are planted in coir or not. To harden off a plant, set it outside in a protected area for one week prior to transplanting. Bring it inside at night or if a frost is expected.

The word "Chelate" is derived from the Greek word for "Claw". Metallic chelates are a complex of a metal ion bound to an organic molecule (ligand).

Metal ions are important minerals for plants. They are required by plants in small amounts, and therefore are being refered to as 'Micronutrients. Their deficiencies result in yellowing of leaves, retarded growth and general low quality crops.

Chelated compounds are more stable than non-chelated compounds. Therefore, metallic chelates are widely used in agriculture as micronutrient fertilizers to supply plants with Iron, Manganese, Zinc and Copper. The most common chelates used in agriculture are EDTA, DTPA and EDDHA.


How Does a Cheate Work?

Metal chelation is important because it makes metal ions more available for uptake by plants. Positively charged metal ions, such as Zn+2, Mn+2, Cu+2 and Fe+2, readily react with negatively charged hydroxide ions (OH-), making them unavailable to plants. OH- ions are abundant in alkaline or neutral soils and soil-less media.

The ligand (a molecule that binds to a central metal atom) coats the metal ion, protecting it from the surrounding OH- ions. The complex can then be easily absorbed by the plant, where it is being degraded and consumed as micronutrients.

Hindalco produces di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) fertiliser. It is the most popular phosphatic fertiliser because of its high nutrient content and good physical properties. The composition of DAP is 18% Nitrogen and P2O5 46%. Within the same facility, Hindalco can also produce nitrogen phosphorus potassium (NPK) complexes as value-added downstream products. It can manufacture NPK complexes such as 10:26:26, 12:32:16 and 20:20:0. Hindalco's DAP plant went on-stream in the year 2000, and has a capacity of 400,000 TPA.

Phosphoric acid is produced at Hindalco's phosphoric acid plant by the chemical reaction of sulphuric acid (generated as by-product from copper smelting process) and rock phosphate (imported). At the DAP plant, phosphoric acid and ammonia are reacted to form DAP. Imported potash is used to produce the NPK complexes.
