Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (INN name: Hypromellose), also simplified as hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), is a variety of nonionic cellulose mixed ethers. It is a semi-synthetic, inactive, viscoelastic polymer .This product is industrial grade HPMC, mainly used as the dispersing agent for PVC production and as the main assistant used in producing PVC suspension polymerization.

HPMC is a type of non-ionic cellulose ether, white powder appearance, odorless and tasteless, soluble in water and most polar organic solvents. Its water solution has a surface activity, high transparency, stable performance. HPMC has a thermal gel properties, after heating, the product solution formed the gel precipitation, dissolving after cooling. Different specifications products have different gel temperature. Solubility changes with viscosity's difference. The lower viscosity, the higher solubility, different specifications HPMC have difference in properties, dissolving HPMC in water won't be affected by PH value.

Redispersible polymer powder should be stored in cool and dry environment. It is recommended to use within 6 months, preferably be used as soon as possible in summer. Storage in high temperature and humidity conditions will increase the risk of caking. Opened containers should be used as soon as possible, if not, should be resealed to prevent ingress of moisture from the air.
Redispersible polymer powder supplied in paper bags should not be stacked. Prolonged heavy pressure may cause caking. Storage under pressure should also be avoided.
The super-softening property of Redispersible Polymer Powder (RDP) can improve the flexibility of cement-based materials while guarantees other work performances. In this study, the influences of different mixing amounts of RDP on the compressive strength, flexural strength, flexural compression ratio and bonding strength of sulphoaluminate cement mortar were investigated. The microscopic morphological structure of RDP-modified sulphoaluminate cement mortar was also observed through SEM to analyse the influence mechanism. Results show that, with the mixing amount of 2.0%, the compressive strength of cement mortar was improved. This mixing amount also increased the 28d flexural strength to 8.21 MPa (5.0% improvement) and 14d bonding strength to 5.6 MPa (27.3% improvement). Addition of more RDP resulted in the increase in flexural compression ratio because the powder particles formed water-insoluble continuous polymer colloidal film in hardened paste. This film generated a network with cement dydration products throughout the paste, consequently promoting the flexibility of cement.
