In foods and beverages, guar gum is used as a thickening, stabilizing, suspending, and binding agent. In manufacturing, guar gum is used as a binding agent in tablets, and as a thickening agent in lotions and creams. How does it work? Guar gum is a fiber that normalizes the moisture content of the stool, absorbing excess liquid in diarrhea, and softening the stool in constipation. It also might help decrease the amount of cholesterol and glucose that is absorbed in the stomach and intestines. There is some interest in using guar gum for weight loss because it expands in the intestine, causing a sense of fullness. This may decrease appetite. USES: Diarrhea. Adding guar gum to the tube feeding formula given to critical care patients may shorten episodes of diarrhea from about 30 days to about 8 days. High cholesterol. Taking guar gum seems to lower cholesterol levels in people with high cholesterol. Guar gum and pectin, taken with small amounts of insoluble fiber, also lower total and “bad” low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, but don't affect “good” high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol or other blood fats called triglycerides. Diabetes. Taking guar gum with meals seems to lower blood sugar after meals in people with diabetes. Diesel EN590 (Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel) describes the physical properties that all automotive diesel fuel must meet if it is to be sold in the European Union and Britain. Since 2007 this is called Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel as the former function of sulphur as a lubricant is absent (and needs to be replaced by additives). Automotive diesel has national variants but the usual variants traded are EN560 and EN590 which are specified by International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in Paris. Ultra lowsulfur diesel (ULSD) is fuel with substantially lower sulfur content. Since 2006, almost all of the petroleum based diesel fuel available in Europe and North America has been of a ULSD type. Diesel EN590 for diesel (in Europe) has been around for almost 20 years. However fuel, like most products, is subject to a process of continuous development and that development includes responding to legislation. The standard has been amended many times since 1993. It had been introduced along with the European emission standards. With each of its revisions EN590 had been adapted to lower the Sulphur content of diesel fuel. The quality of European diesel fuels is specified by the EN590 standard. While these specifications not are mandatory, they are observed by all fuel suppliers in Europe.
