Due to the anaesthetic power of its alkamide constituents, the plant is effective in suppressing toothache temporarily if unripe fruits or the wood of young branches are chewed. Description: Chamomile is an annual plant with thin spindle-shaped roots only penetrating flatly into the soil. The branched stem is erected, heavily ramified, and grows to a height of 1080 cm. The long and narrow leaves are bi- to tripinnate. The flower heads are placed separately, they have a diameter of 1030 mm, and they are pedunculate and heterogamous. The golden yellow tubular florets with 5 teeth are 1.52.5 mm long, ending always in a glandulous tube. The 1127 white plant flowers are 611 mm long, 3.5 mm wide, and arranged concentrically. The receptacle is 68 mm wide, flat in the beginning and conical, cone-shaped later, hollowthe latter being a very important distinctive characteristic of Matricariaand without paleae. The fruit is a yellowish brown achene. Medicinal Properties: It has stimulant and slightly tonic properties, and is of value as a nervine and emmenagogue, having also diuretic and diaphoretic action. Its chief employment is as an emmenagogue, often in combination with Pennyroyal and Southern wood. It is also useful as a diaphoretic in the commencement of cold. It is given in infusion, which should be prepared in a covered vessel, 1 OZ. of the herb to 1 pint of boiling water, and given in 1/2 teaspoonful doses, while warm. The infusion may be taken cold as a tonic, in similar doses, three times daily: it has a bitterish and aromatic taste. It is hardy to zone 7. It is in leaf 12-January. It is in flower from April to May, and the seeds ripen from July to August. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Insects. Suitable for light (sandy) and medium (loamy) soils and prefers well-drained soil. Suitable pH: acid soils and can grow in very acid soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers moist soil. Active Compounds: The major constituents of the anthopogon oil were α-Pinene (37.39%), β-Pinene (15.98 %),Limonene (13.26%), and δ-Cadinene (9.91%). The anthopogon oil consisted mainlymonoterpenes. While the major constituents of Anthopogon oil as reported by Yonzonet al., (2005) were o-cadinene (11.4%), α-pinene (8.3%), β-caryophyllene (6.5%) and β-pinene(6.2%). They are usually olive green in color, may have some brownish spots and have three veins down the length of the leaf. True tejpat leaves impart a strong cassia- or cinnamon-like aroma to dishes. Nepalese Grocery stores carry true tejpat leaves. Active Compounds: The yield of the oil on a dry weight basis ranged from 1.2% to 3.9% (w/w). Phenyl propanoids constitute the major portion (88.9-95.0%) of the oils. Fifty-four compounds were identified from the oils.
