Senna is an ancient plant which was used for remedial purposes by people during the epochs of old civilisations such as the ancient Egyptian civilization. The tropical plant which belongs to the Cassia family is well known in countries such as Sudan where the leaves of the plant are used to cure stomach problems, notably acute constipation. This is mainly because Senna (Or Sana Makki as it is known in East Africa) has a unique ability to act as an effective laxative which can relieve the bowel and work on the colon in a rapid manner. That is why most the aperient and stool softeners sold in pharmacies contain Senna. It has to be emphasized that the leaves of the Senna are a more effective purgative than the pods of the plant.
