Maize or Indian corn is a stout annual plant cultivated for the grains during the rainy season. It forms a staple food in some parts of India. Roots are of fibrous adventitious type. Primary root aborts after germination, and is replaced by fibrous adventitious ones from the base of stem. Stems are stout, solid with distinct nodes and internodes. Leaves are simple with entire margin, quite large, linear in shape and arranged alternately. The arrangement is distichous or 2-ranked. They have sheathing leaf-base surrounding a part of internode above. Membranous ligule is present at the junction of base and blade. Venation is parallel. All the organs have rough surface due to impregnation of silica. Inflorescences are of two types, viz. terminal staminate compound raceme or panicle and axillary pistillate spadix. Male inflorescence consists of many spikelets. The spikelets occur in pairsâ??the lower one is sessile and the upper one is stalked. Each spikelet is two-flowered. They have four glumes.

Maize has become a staple food in many parts of the world, with the total production of maize surpassing that of wheat or rice. In addition to being consumed directly by humans (often in the form of masa), maize is also used for corn ethanol, animal feed and other maize products, such as corn starch and corn syrup. The six major types of maize are dent corn, flint corn, pod corn, popcorn, flour corn, and sweet corn.
Maize is a cultigen; human intervention is required for it to propagate. Whether or not the kernels fall off the cob on their own is a key piece of evidence used in archaeology to distinguish domesticated maize from its naturally-propagating teosinte ancestor. Genetic evidence can also be used to determine when various lineages split.

An 2002 study by Matsuoka et al.. has demonstrated that, rather than the multiple independent domestications model, all maize arose from a single domestication in southern Mexico about 9,000 years ago. The study also demonstrated that the oldest surviving maize types are those of the Mexican highlands. Later, maize spread from this region over the Americas along two major paths. This is consistent with a model based on the archaeological record suggesting that maize diversified in the highlands of Mexico before spreading to the lowlands.

Maize, also known as corn, is a tall grass that produces cereal grain. It is the most produced cereal in the world. It is a staple food for humans and is used in animal feed and as raw material in various industries. Maize is mainly used for animal feed and industrial applications.

What are the uses of maize?

Maize has multiple uses, and as explained earlier that it is mainly used as a key ingredient in the animal feed industry and in industrial applications. However, it is used for other sources as well:

  • Human Consumption: Breads, Snacks, Cereal, Beverages, Oil, Starch, Sweeteners, Corn Syrup, etc.
  • Industrial Applications: Paper Manufacturing, Textile, Medicines, Adhesives, etc.
  • Animal Feed
  • Biofuel: Ethanol

What is the global demand and market size of maize?

The maize market is witnessing fluctuations due to multiple factors such as growing consumer demand for non-genetically modified maize, which has led to an increase in the cost of organically produced maize. Due to climatic conditions, the maize fields are being significantly affected, which is forcing the producers/farmers to produce genetically modified maize.

Despite these factors, the maize industry has a gradual growth:

  • 2024: US$148.69 billion
  • 2025: US$154.93 billion
  • 2033: US$ 215.32 billion
  • CAGR 2025-2033: 4.2%
