The ball features a hole, or port, through the middle, which allows flow to occur when the port is aligned with both ends of the valve. When the valve is closed, the hole is perpendicular to the valveâ??s ends, preventing flow. The location of the handle allows you to see the position of the valve. The upstream pressure presses the ball into the seat on a floating ball type, resulting in a tight shut off. The ball is fixed on a trunnion-mounted type; seat sealing action is produced by the thrust of springs operating on the seat rings, which presses the seat rings against the ball as the pressure increases. Even after years of inactivity, ball valves are strong enough to produce a perfect shutdown. As a result, ball valves are an excellent choice for shutoff applications and are frequently favoured over globe and gate valves, especially in smaller sizes.
