Rheum Emodi, commonly known as Himalayan rhubarb, is a medicinal herb used in the Ayurvedic system of medicine and it is a conventional natural dye used for textile. It makes bright yellow colour and obtains an odoriferous property. This dye is produced by drying the rhizome and roots of a Rheum Emodi. Dye is extracted in aqueous medium from dry powdered materials. The dye when dissolved in soft water gives golden yellow shade with the salt Alum and copper sulphate on wool and silk. It belongs to the family polygonacease. Rheum Emodi has been used in various traditional system as laxative, tonic, diuretic and to treat fever, cough, indigestion, menstrual disorder since antiquity. This plant shares core medicinal values in the Indian Ayurveda, as it acquires anti-inflammatory and anti bacterial properties. The medicinal properties of the same are as purgative and astringent tonic. Rhubarb is used as purgative.
