Clove is used as seasoning, either grounded first or used whole. As seasoning, it is widely used in Asian and European countries. In Indonesia, Clove is also used as the main ingredient of clove cigarettes. In Japan and China, it is also used as materials for incenses. Its oil is used as aromatherapy oil and to reduce pain from toothaches.
Cloves are used in spice cookies and cakes. In Indonesia, clove finds its most popular usage as the dominant flavoring agent for kretek, namely the clove aromatized cigarettes. Clove also produces essential oil. Clove oil is extracted by water distillation and mixes well with cinnamon, cedar, lavender, rose and bergamot. Cloves contain about 2% of the triterpene oleanolic acid. Clove oil has beenproven useful as supplement to help stomach upsets, chills and impotence.
