Bitumen emulsion is a mixture of fine droplets of bitumen and water. But as the bitumen is a petroleum product it doesn’t mix with water and as it is sticky in nature, it doesn’t easily gets disintegrated into fine droplets. To overcome this problem an emulsifier is used. Emulsifier can be defined as a surface-active agent. Emulsifier keeps the bitumen in its fine droplet state by disallowing it to mix with other droplets. As the droplets are very fine they suspend in water. Therefore, bitumen emulsion is a dispersed liquid consisting of three products, i.e. water, bitumen and emulsion. Bitumen emulsion is a mixture of fine droplets of bitumen and water. Uses Cationic emulsions may be used at ambient temperatures with aggregates, which need not be completely dry. Emulsions are less hazardous to use and can be applied in a wider range of conditions. Advantages a) Cationic emulsions may be used at ambient temperatures with aggregates, which need not be completely dry. b) Lower costs are incurred due to a considerable saving on fuel for heating purposes. c) Operating at lower temperatures for cold mixing gives a greater margin of safety, even though these emulsions may contain fluxing oil. d) Not only may cold mix be stockpiled for long periods, but it may also be packaged in small containers and stored. This facilitates the treatment of very small areas quickly, cleanly and economically. Disadvantages A regular water supply is required and this can be a great problem in very hot countries, where water can be in very short supply. Bitumen penetration grade 60/70 means the penetration value is in the range 60 to 70 at standard test conditions which commonly used as a Paving Grade. Bitumen is applicable for the production of hot mix asphalt for bases and pavements and for road construction.Penetration Grade Bitumen supplied by MERCO Bahrain. Its penetration grade ( the measure of bitumen hardness) is between 60 to 70. Bitumen is specified by the penetration and softening point test.Penetration determines the hardness of bitumen by measuring the depth to which a standard loaded the needle will vertically penetrate in 5 seconds, in a sample of bitumen maintained at a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius. Cutback Bitumen ( Liquid Bitumen ) is Bitumen that is dissolved in a solvent . Typical solvents include Naptha, gasoline and kerosene, white spirit etc. The type of solvent controls the curing time while the amount determines the viscosity of the Cutback Bitumen. The advantage Cutbacks have over Emulsions is a much higher residual Bitumen percent, typically over 80% compares with over 40-65% for Bitumen emulsions. The result is more Bitumen left on the roadway after curing, for the same volume of binder applied. Application Cutback bitumen’s suitable for primer sealing can also be used in the manufacture ofpre-mix asphalt, which is used in patch repairs.Cutback bitumen’s are used extensively in sprayed sealingapplications, particularly in cooler weather where theyprovide improved initial stone retention due to their Price of Product (USD) : 503 Product Origin : Merco W.L.L Bahrain Key Specifications / Special Features : Cutback Classification Cutbacks are divided into two classifications, Rapid-Curing (RC) and Medium-Curing (MC) depending on the solvent used. Anode butts are the residual electrode left in the electrode holder at the end of electrolysis with prebaked carbon anodes. The anode carbon is being consumed by ohmic resistive heat and electrolytic oxidation. However the part of anode just above the melt is being continuously subjected to high temperature reactions with fluoride melt and atmospheric oxidation, which ultimately results in impurities left in the discarded anode butts. At the end of their use, the left over part of the anode (called butts) are crushed and recycled to produce new anodes. However, while recycling the butts the built-up of sodium concentration is closely checked and controlled in order to avoid harmful effect of excess sodium in newly formed anodes. Good quality anodes should be oxidation resistant in gaseous environment in order to minimize oxidation on the expose surface (C + O2 2CO) [19] Price of Product (USD) : 300 Product Origin : MERCO W.L.L BAHRAIN
