A heat exchanger is a system used to transfer heat between a source and a working fluid. Heat exchangers are used in both cooling and heating processes. The fluids may be separated by a solid wall to prevent mixing, or they may be in direct contact.

Hairpin heat exchangers (often also referred to as â??double pipesâ??) are characterized by a construction form which imparts a U shaped appearance to the heat exchanger. In its classical sense, the term double pipe refers to a heat exchanger consisting of a pipe within a pipe, usually of a straight-leg construction with no bends. However, due to the need for removable bundle construction and the ability to handle differential thermal expansion while avoiding the use of expansion joints (often the weak point of the exchanger), the current U-shaped configuration has become the standard in the industry.

Anode butts are the residual electrode left in the electrode holder at the end of electrolysis with prebaked carbon anodes. The anode carbon is being consumed by ohmic resistive heat and electrolytic oxidation. However the part of anode just above the melt is being continuously subjected to high temperature reactions with fluoride melt and atmospheric oxidation, which ultimately results in impurities left in the discarded anode butts.At the end of their use, the left over part of the anode (called butts) are crushed and recycled to produce new anodes. However, while recycling the butts the built-up of sodium concentration is closely checked and controlled in order to avoid harmful effect of excess sodium in newly formed anodes. Good quality anodes should be oxidation resistant in gaseous environment in order to minimize oxidation on the expose surface (C + O2 2CO) [19]

To overcome this problem an emulsifier is used. Emulsifier can be defined as a surface-active agent. Emulsifier keeps the bitumen in its fine droplet state by disallowing it to mix with other droplets. As the droplets are very fine they suspend in water.

Uses
Cationic emulsions may be used at ambient temperatures with aggregates, which need not be completely dry. Emulsions are less hazardous to use and can be applied in a wider range of conditions. Advantages

b) Lower costs are incurred due to a considerable saving on fuel for heating purposes.

c) Operating at lower temperatures for cold mixing gives a greater margin of safety, even though these emulsions may contain fluxing oil.
d) Not only may cold mix be stockpiled for long periods, but it may also be packaged in small containers and stored. This facilitates the treatment of very small areas quickly, cleanly and economically. Disadvantages
A regular water supply is required and this can be a great problem in very hot countries, where water can be in very short supply.
