Located at the northern end of Sumatra, Aceh is the melting pot of different cultures, traditions, fantastic culinary, and geographic stretch of panoramic beauty. Itâ??s also dubbed as the central hub of the biggest arabica coffee productions in Indonesia. Not only does Aceh have the largest capacity, itâ??s also prized for its specialty and world class coffee - namely the Gayo Coffee.
This Arabica variety first entered the highland of Gayo in Central Aceh around the early 1900 or during the occupation of the Netherlands. This chapter brought a new breath of life to the local farmers with the opening of coffee farms and plantations, existing primarily on the highlands of Central Aceh, Bener Meriah and Gayo Lues.
Gayo beans are also grown around Lake Laut Tawar at about 1000-1500 mdlp altitude in the Bukit Barisan mountain range. Small farmers work on a small plantation measuring not more than 2-hectare each. The harvest seasons range from April to July and October to January. The Arabica Gayo coffee beans are most sought after for its aromatic fragrance and flavorful taste.
