Inert ceramic balls have stable chemical features and a low rate of water absorption, inert ceramic balls can resist high temperatures and high pressure.
Inert ceramic balls can also resist the corrosion of acid, alkali and some other organic solvents, inert ceramic balls are able to stand the thermal shock (sharp change of temperature) during the chemical reaction process.
The main role of these inert ceramic balls is to increase the distribution spots of gas or liquid, and to support and protect the catalyst of low strength in the reactors (a column or a tower).

Zirconia toughened alumina ceramics (ZTA) are material of white, wear-resistant, corrosion-resistant and good chemical stability. Alumina ceramics have high hardness and zirconia ceramics have good toughness. The most commonly method for toughening alumina ceramics is zirconia toughening. Adding an appropriate amount of zirconia to alumina, the two materials form an excellent composite material with high strength and high toughness, with better physical and chemical properties, and a wider range of applications. ZTA has higher flexural strength, fracture toughness and excellent wear resistance. According to the special requirements of different users, the specific ratio of alumina and zirconia can be adjusted to obtain ZTA with different properties. The performance of zirconia toughened alumina ceramics is better than that of 95 alumina ceramics, and the price is much lower than that of zirconia ceramics; in many working conditions where alumina ceramics are not competent, ZTA shows a better cost performance than zirconia ceramics, and is widely used in mining, machinery, electronics, petroleum, chemical and aerospace,etc.

Alumina ceramics is the most mature of the engineering ceramics, offering excellent electrical insulation properties together with high hardness and good wear resistance but relatively low strength and fracture toughness. Alumina ceramic has excellent thermal stability, which means that it is widely used in areas where resistance to high temperatures is essential. Alumina ceramic is the material of choice for alumina wear parts. The proven wear and heat resistance of alumina wear parts makes them ideal for the manufacture of wear-resistant components. Alumina has a high melting point, high hardness, although mechanical strength is reduced at temperatures above 1000 C. Due to the relatively large coefficient of thermal expansion, thermal shock resistance is reduced. Alumina is an electrically insulating material, with a high electrical resistivity, increasing with purity. Good chemical stability of alumina leads to high corrosion resistance. It is insoluble in water and only slightly soluble in strong acid and alkaline solutions. Testing has shown that the low chemical solubility of alumina ceramics components makes them highly resistant to chemical corrosion. This is what makes high purity alumina the material of choice for components in a wide range of industrial applications.
