According to EN 14683: 2019, surgical masks can be classified as Type I, II or IIR according to their performance in relation to the parameters of bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE), pressure differential, Bioburden (indicator of microbialcleaning) and splash resistance (Type IIR only). Type IIR surgical masks are specifically designed for professional use and can be used in operating theaters and clinical procedures with a risk of projection onto the face of organic fluids.
