Garcinia cambogia is a herbal product derived from fruit of the Malabar tamarind tree (also called Garcinia gummi-gutta) which is native to India, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Common names include Garcinia cambogia (a former scientific name), as well as brindleberry, Malabar tamarind, and kudam puli (pot tamarind). With thin skin and deep vertical lobes, the fruit of G. gummi-gutta and related species range from about the size of an orange to that of a grapefruit; G. gummi-gutta looks more like a small yellowish, greenish, or sometimes reddish pumpkin.
Composition:
Chemical components of Garcinia extracts include xanthones, benzophenones, amino acids and organic acids, most importantly hydroxycitric acid (HCA) the suspected ingredient responsible for its antiinflammatory and appetite suppressant activity. Garcinia fruit is 10% to 30% HCA by weight, and extracts can contain between 20% and 60% of the tricarboxylic acid. HCA inhibits ATP citrate lyase an enzyme involved in fatty acid synthesis. The extract of HCA is available in powdered form or pill form.
Senna Leaf is commonly known as senna or Alexandrian senna, and its scientific name is Cassia angustifolia. It is a herb. The active components sennoside in senna leaf extract are anthraquinone derivatives and their glucosides, referred to as senna glycosides or sennosides.
Senna is an FDA-approved over-the-counter (OTC) laxative. A prescription is not required to purchase senna. The two original kinds of senna (Cassia senna and Cassia angustifolia) used to make remedies are now mass-cultivated for medicinal purposes â?? primarily for their laxative properties. Senna is often taken as a tea, capsule, tablet or liquid extract.
Senna has been used since the 9th century by Arabian physicians as a laxative and has been known as the "cleansing herb." "Only the leaves and the pods of the herb are therapeutically useful," states Herbs 2000.
Curcumin is a water-soluble bright yellow (orange-yellow) chemical produced by Curcuma longa plants. It is the principal curcuminoid of turmeric (Curcuma longa), a member of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae. The other curcuminoids are demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin. While turmeric contains only 2 - 9% curcuminoids, 75% of these active curcuminoids are curcumin, which is why curcumin is the star of turmeric.
Curcumin has antioxidant, antiviral and antifungal actions. Studies have shown that curcumin is not toxic to humans.
It is a variety of the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), which contains a protein (±-amylase blocker) that purportedly blocks the breakdown and digestion of starch.
Compounds of white kidney bean extract:
±-Amylase blocker: also referred to as phaseolamin, this lectin acts as a carbohydrate blocker by preventing the binding of starch to the enzyme that breaks it down (±-amylase). This means that fewer carbohydrates are absorbed into the body.
Phytohemagglutinin: this lectin binds to receptors on the intestinal lining and suppresses appetite by influencing the release of certain hormones (decreases ghrelin) .
