Alum is essentially aluminium sulphate with the empirical formula Al2 (SO4)3.18HO.

Non Ferric Alum is a purer form of aluminum sulphate. It is used in better grades of paper for loading and sizing purposes. It is available both, in solid and in liquid forms.

Ferric alum, also called as Aluminum Sulphate or Ferric Ammonium Sulphate or Iron Alum and has a melting point of 100C. Ferric alum is basically a less pure form of Aluminum Sulphate. When Bauxite and Sulphur Acid are cooked at a certain condition, leading to the formulation of Ferric Alum. It can also be prepared by the crystallization of Ferric Sulphate and Ammonium Sulphate. Its appearance is light violet in color and comes in various forms such as Powder, Lumps, Slabs and Crystal. It is also available in liquid form. Alum is a weak oxidizing agent and being paramagnetic and acidic in nature, it's toxic towards microorganisms.
