Testa or Cashew Husk as it is commonly called is a by-product of cashew processing. It is an outer cover of the cashew kernel and is between kernel and pericarp of the cashew nut. It is slightly reddish in colour. The cashew husk is one of the sources of vegetable tanning materials available indigenously.

Cashew Husk has very high concentrations of tannins, as a result it one of the best candidates used in the commercial production of tannin.

The Tree

The cashew-nut tree is a fast growing tropical tree growing to a height of 6 -12 m (20 – 40 f). Its evergreen leaves are oval, leathery and dark green. It originates from the Caribbean Island and the North East of Brazil. But today it is grown in several other tropical parts of the world. Mostly in Africa, India and Ivory Coast being one on the leading growers in the West African region. Blossoming takes place between November and January and within two months, fruits are fully ripped and ready for harvesting.

The Fruit (Cashew Apple)

The cashew fruit (Anacardium occidentale) is attached to the lower portion of the cashew apple. The cashew apple is oval-shaped, like bell pepper: yellow, orange or red in color is a false fruit which is also edible. The apple is highly perishable but very healthy. It can be eaten fresh or juiced. Syrup, wine, brandy, gin, preserved fruit, pickles and glazed fruit are also made from the cashew apple.

The real fruit (cashew seed), a more discreet nut is attached to the end of the fake fruit. It is that which contains the edible kernel, which we call cashew nut. The cashew seed hangs at the bottom of the apple, and is C-shaped. In its raw form the cashew kernel is soft, white and meaty.

The Cashew tree (Anacardium Occidentale) is a tropical evergreen native to the Americas but is now widely cultivated in Asia and Africa. Cashew in its natural form is a soft, white, meaty kernel contained within the hard shells of kidney shaped, raw cashew nuts. Cashew is consumed all over the world as a snack or used as a food ingredient. Every year, the world eats more than 600,000 metric tons of cashew. And fortunately, it’s a very healthy food. Cashew nuts are among the most nutritious nuts in the world. Cashew Nuts are low in fat, have zero cholesterol, are high in protein, and include a large amount of important vitamins and minerals.

Every single cashew nut comes from its own cashew apple, which are grown on cashew trees and thrive in tropical climates. The nuts are then collected, dried, shelled, peeled, graded, and roasted.
