R-123 was specifically developed as a replacement for R-11 in low-pressure centrifugal chillers. However, retrofitting existing R-11 chillers to R-123 may require replacing certain components like seals, gaskets, and other system parts to ensure proper operation and avoid leaks.

ASHRAE Safety Rating: R-123 has an ASHRAE rating of B1, meaning it has low toxicity but requires more stringent safety measures. Lower personal exposure levels are allowed during normal daily operation, but machinery rooms must follow specific requirements as per ASHRAE Standard 15 (Safety Code for Mechanical Refrigeration).
Retrofitting Considerations: When converting from R-11 to R-123, modifications may be necessary, including the replacement of gaskets and seals to achieve optimal operational conditions and leak prevention.
Low-Pressure Performance: R-123 is optimized for low-pressure centrifugal chiller systems, providing efficient cooling and performance in large industrial and commercial applications.
Safety Requirements:
Personal Exposure: Extra precautions must be taken due to the B1 rating, which permits lower exposure levels during service and daily operation.
EPA Certification: An EPA certification card is required to purchase R-123 or any other CFC and HCFC refrigerants, in compliance with environmental safety regulations.
