The Aniline Point of an oil is defined as the minimum temperature at which equal volumes of aniline (C6H5NH2) and the oil are miscible, i.e. form a single phase upon mixing. The value gives an approximation for the content of aromatic compounds in the oil, since the miscibility of aniline, which is also an aromatic compound suggests the presence of similar (i.e. aromatic) compounds in the oil. The lower the aniline point, the greater is the content of aromatic compounds in the oil. The aniline point serves as a reasonable proxy for aromaticity of oils consisting mostly of saturated hydrocarbons (i.e. alkanes, paraffins) or unsaturated compounds (mostly aromatics). Significant chemical functionalization of the oil (chlorination, sulfonation, etc.) can interfere with the measurement, due to changes to the solvency of the functionalized oil. METHOD A: ANILINE POINT APPARATUS as per IP 2 & IS 1448 (P-3), ASTM D 611 METHOD A, complete with jacket (without thermometer) Optional Accessories: • Spare outer jacket with cork Spare tube with cork • Heater for above with energy regulator METHOD B: ANILINE POINT APPARATUS as per IP-2 method B, IS 1448 (P-3), ASTM D 611 by thin film METHOD B, Electrically heated with motorized stirrer (without thermometer). The apparatus consists of an Archimedean type pump ie. glass tube pump body, S.S. pump, variable speed small motor, within an Aniline sample container with an integral light well, illuminated by a 6 V lamp. The whole assembly is heated in small glass beaker bath controlled by energy regulator. Electrically operated stirrer is also provided. Optional Accessories: • Spare tap • Spare Contraction chamber • Spare metal stirrer METHOD C: ANILINE POINT APPARATUS for volatile liquids as per IP-2 method ‘C’ (without thermometer). METHOD D: ANILINE POINT APPARATUS as per IP-2 1977, METHOD D by U-tube method electrically heated with FHP stirrer without thermometer. The apparatus consists of U-tube assembly which is mounted in a glass bath which is heated electrically and controlled by energy regulator. A small electric motor stirrer is provided for the bath. Optional Accessories: • Spare ‘U’ tube Thermometer for Aniline Point: • I.P.20C (-38/42ºC x 0.2C). • I.P.21C (-25/105ºC x 0.2C). • I.P.59C (90/170C x 0.2C).
