Nigerian Dried Split Ginger Description: Ginger (Zingiber Officinale) is a commodity that is highly valued in international markets for its aroma, pungency and high oil and Aleo resin content. Nigeria is the third largest exporter of ginger in the world after China and India. Most of the dried ginger that are available for international trade are simply sun-dried over a few days, but artificial drying is also used in areas lacking a defined dry season to coincide with the harvest. The rhizome is dried to between 10 and 12 percent moisture content. Dried ginger is usually presented in a split or sliced form. Splitting is said to be preferred to slicing, as slicing loses more flavor, but the sliced are easier to grind and this is the predominant form of dried ginger currently in the market. Harvest: harvesting of ginger starts from October and normally continues until April/May. This largely depends on the market situation as ginger can be left on the ground (not harvested) for two years. Locations: Ginger is produced in six states of the Federation namely, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Benue, Niger, and Gombe with Kaduna as the major producer. Nigeriaâ??s production in 2005 was estimated at 110,000 metric tons (FAO). Out of this, 10% is locally consumed as fresh ginger while 90% is dried primarily for the export markets. BITTER KOLA/GARCINIA KOLA is a tropical flowering plant found in western and central Africa, which produces large, orange fruits and brown, nut-like seeds embedded in an orange-colored pulp. The seed plays a very important role in African ethno-medicine, in the treatment of coughs, colds, hoarseness of voice, liver diseases, and as aphrodisiac. Garcinia kola is used as a substitute for hops in brewing lager beer, and in preventing beer spoilage. The seeds have been formulated into tablets and are also used in many herbal preparations, either singly or in combination with other plants. Hepa-Vital Tea, a blend of G. kola and Combretum micranttum, and Hangover Tonic, comprising kolaviron and Cola nitida, are manufactured and marketed as phytomedicines. The constituents isolated from the seed include xanthones, benzophenones, and kolaviron. The hepatoprotective properties of the seed have been associated with the isolated bioflavonoid complex kolaviron.

Antimony is nonmalleable, hard and brittle and can be crushed to a powder. Compared with metals, antimony is a poor conductor of electricity and heat. Antimony is the 63rd-most abundant element in Earth's crust. It is less abundant than tin, arsenic and the rare earths, but more so than bismuth, mercury and silver. Antimony tends to concentrate in sulfide ores along with copper, lead and silver. It occurs sparingly as a free element, but when it does it is usually in association with arsenic, bismuth or silver. The principal ore minerals of antimony are stibnite and jamesonite, but it can also be a byproduct of certain other minerals. Eighty percent of the world's antimony is produced from two types of deposits carbonate replacement deposits and gold-antimony epithermal deposits. The majority of antimony is consumed in the production of antimony trioxide (ATO), a compound used in flame-retardant materials. Combined with halogenated particles, ATO suppresses, reduces or delays the spread of flame. It is incorporated into adhesives, paints, plastics, rubber insulation, decorative foams, building materials and textiles, including upholstered furniture.
Zinc ore occurs in two types of deposit: as primary zinc ore in thin veins known as rakes, or a secondary deposit formed by weathering of the primary mineral veins. Zinc ore is most commonly found as zinc carbonate (ZnCO3), known as calamine or smithsonite. It generally occurs as rounded, crystalline crusts or granular, honeycombed masses that have a vitreous or pearly luster and are typically dirty brown or grey in colour. Locally it was known as â??dry boneâ?? ore, having a cellular to spongy appearance reminiscent of dry bone. Calamine is actually a secondary mineral, found principally in the oxidized zone of the zinc-bearing ore deposits. It is derived from the alteration of the primary zinc sulphide (ZnS) mineral sphalerite. This is generally a dark grey or black, highly lustrous mineral, but can vary in appearance. Both occur on Mendip. Its chief use was to make brass by mixing with copper.
