About Raw Bauxite:
The processing of Raw Bauxite is done at a number of alumina refineries in the world. Bauxite can be processed at a low-temperature autoclave digestion (145 oC to 155 oC). Raw Bauxite can be used also for sweetening stage and for non-autoclave digestion in agitators (105 oC).
About 85% of bauxite mined worldwide is used to produce alumina for refining into Aluminium metal and the balance 15% is processed and value added to make its way to other uses like refractory, chemical, cement, abrasives, etc. Aluminium is possibly the most versatile product with applications in almost every industry. The composition of bauxite consists mainly of aluminium hydroxide minerals, such as gibbsite Al(OH)3 along with various impurities such as iron oxides, silica, and titanium. The colour of bauxite can range from grey to brown, yellowish-brown, or reddish-brown, depending on the presence of impurities. Bauxite is a crucial raw material for the production of aluminium, which is widely used in various industries such as transportation, construction, packaging, electrical appliances, and aerospace. Aluminium is valued for its lightweight, corrosion resistance, high conductivity, and recyclability. Bauxite mining and aluminium production have significant economic impacts in countries with abundant reserves.
Calcined Bauxite is obtained by calcining (heating) superior grade Bauxite at high temperature (from 850 oC to 1600 oC). This removes moisture thereby increasing the alumina content. Compared to an alumina content of about 57 % to 58 % in raw Bauxite, Calcined Bauxite has an alumina content of 82 % to 86 %. The heating is carried out in rotary kilns. Calcination is done at different temperatures ranging from 850 oC to 1600 oC depending upon the customer’s application.

Applications of Calcined Bauxite:
Refractory Grade Calcined Bauxite (CB - I and CB - II Grade) : To make refractory grade, Bauxite is thermally treated at 1600 oC to produce Calcined Bauxite where the Alumina content is mostly above 82%.
Brown Fused Alumina, Proppants and Road Surfacing : To make the above grades, Bauxite is thermally treated at 1000 oC - 1200 oC to produce Calcined Bauxite where the Alumina content is anywhere between 80-88% depending on the requirement.

Calcination is a process of heating, hence calcined bauxite is obtained by heating the high grade ore of the bauxite. Heating further removes the moisture content from the ore and thus results in the increase of the alumina content.
Calcined bauxite is produced by sintering/calcining with natural bauxite ore of low iron, low alkali at temperatures of 1600 - 1800 degree Celsius in the rotary kiln or round kiln through pre-heationg, calcination, cooling and other processes. During Calcining, it can be removed impurities and improving the content of alumina. Refractory grade bauxite has high refractoriness, good mechanical strength and moderate slag resistance. Therefore calcined bauxite is one of the most important raw materials for the production of shaped and unshaped refractories for the steel industry, foundries, glass and cement plants.
