Sea cucumbers are echinoderms from the Holothuroidea class. They are marine animals with rough skin and elongated bodies containing a single, branched gonad. They are found on the seabed all over the world. with the largest number being in the Asia-Pacific region. Many of them are collected for human consumption and some species are cultivated in aquaculture systems. The harvested product is called sea cucumber. Sea cucumbers have a useful role in marine ecosystems because they help recycle nutrients, break down detritus and other organic materials, after which bacteria can continue the decay process. Like all echinoderms, sea cucumbers have an endoskeleton just beneath the skin, a calcified structure that is usually reduced to isolated microscopic bones (or scleriet) held together by connective tissue. In some species, these plates can sometimes be enlarged into flat plates, forming a shield. In pelagic species such as Pelagothuria natatrix (order Elasipodida, family Pelagothuriidae), the skeleton is absent and there are no calcareous rings. Sea cucumbers are named because of their similarity to the fruit of the cucumber plant.
