Bentonite has strong colloidal properties and, when in contact with water, increases its volume several fold by swelling, forming a tixotropic, gelatinous substance. Drilling Grade (API Grades, OCMA) Drilling-grade bentonite is a naturally occurring clay containing the clay minerals of smectite. It can also contain accessory minerals, such as quartz, mica, feldspar, and calcite. The Drilling Grade Bentonite Powder is used as a mud constituent for oil and water well drilling. Its roles are mainly to seal the borehole walls, remove drill cuttings, and lubricate the cutting head.
