The Star Aniseed we usually see in the markets is the dried fruit of illicium verum Hook.f. It usually has 8 petals, forming an 8-petal star with diameter about 2.5 to 3.0 cm. When it is fresh, it is green; and when it is dried, it is reddish- brown.
Inside each petal, there is a seed, which is a little brown and very shiny. All the leaves, stems, flowers and fruits of this tree contain essential oil, which is very sweet smelling, fragrant and pungent too. Usually the Star Anise of Vietnam Origin has much more oil content than China origin.
