Calcination is a process of heating, hence calcined bauxite is obtained by heating the high grade ore of the bauxite. Heating further removes the moisture content from the ore and thus results in the increase of the alumina content.
Bauxite, an aluminium ore, is the world’s main source of aluminium. It consists mostly of the minerals gibbsite, boehmite and diaspore, mixed with the two iron oxides goethite and haematite.

The composition of bauxite consists mainly of aluminium hydroxide minerals, such as gibbsite Al(OH)3 along with various impurities such as iron oxides, silica, and titanium. The colour of bauxite can range from grey to brown, yellowish-brown, or reddish-brown, depending on the presence of impurities. Bauxite is a crucial raw material for the production of aluminium, which is widely used in various industries such as transportation, construction, packaging, electrical appliances, and aerospace. Aluminium is valued for its lightweight, corrosion resistance, high conductivity, and recyclability. Bauxite mining and aluminium production have significant economic impacts in countries with abundant reserves.
Calcined bauxite is produced by sintering/calcining with natural bauxite ore of low iron, low alkali at temperatures of 1600 - 1800 degree Celsius in the rotary kiln or round kiln through pre-heationg, calcination, cooling and other processes. During Calcining, it can be removed impurities and improving the content of alumina. Refractory grade bauxite has high refractoriness, good mechanical strength and moderate slag resistance. Therefore calcined bauxite is one of the most important raw materials for the production of shaped and unshaped refractories for the steel industry, foundries, glass and cement plants.
In its mineral form Bauxite, Aluminium is the most abundant metal in the earth's crust. Bauxite contains one of a variety of hydrated aluminium oxides (gibbsite, boehmite or diaspore), which are often expressed as Al2O3xH2O but are more commonly regarded as impure Al2O3. Bauxite is claylike and earthy, and ranges in colour from white to deep brown or red according to the nature and quantity of its components. The major impurities in Bauxite are iron oxides (goethite & hematite), silicon dioxide, the clay mineral kaolinite as well as small amounts of anatase (TiO2). Consequently, its composition varies considerably with alumina constituting from about 50% to about 70%. Aluminium content can be accurately and precisely determined over a broad analytical range simultaneously along with Si, Fe, Mn, Ti, Zr and up to 20+ other elements.
