Calcium alginate swabs or swabs with wooden shafts should not be used when testing for COVID-19 as these can contain substances that inactivate some viruses and can inhibit PCR testing. For initial diagnostic testing, PHE recommends collecting and testing of the nasal respiratory tract or a throat respiratory tract. All testing should be conducted in consultation with a healthcare provider. Once the swab has been used to take a sample, simply break off at the break line and enter into the tube with VTM. This can then be sent through the mail using our P650 set, or entered into the RigidSafetyBag and then into the UN3373 mailing envelope.
