Alloyed rolls are special steels alloyed with nickel, chromium & molybdenum which is used in breakdown, roughing & intermediate mills for finishing of heavy sections. These rolls are statically casted and undergo a three stage high temperature heat treatment comprising of annealing, normalizing & tempering rotation. The rolls are available in a wide variety of composition & properties to suit specific application. The matrix structure is pearlitic or bainitic depending on the alloy content. Changing the carbide distribution obtained through controlled chemical composition varies the hardness. It's used in finishing rolls for sheet, plate and strip mills.Intermediate and finishing rolls for small section, bar and wire rod mills. Closed die forging A heated workpiece is placed in a stationary mold half. The upper mold half is pushed against the workpiece with an applied pressure force and deformed and shaped by the two mold halves. It often requires several strokes before the mold cavity is fully filled. To ensure that such a material is sufficient to fill the mold the workpiece volume is slightly larger than the mold. The design allows for excess material to flow outside the required shape and is trimmed away in a subsequent operation. In some cases, the part is repositioned in the mold to apply further strokes to achieve final size and volume. Investment casting is one of the oldest manufacturing processes.Investment casting process was used mainly to reproduce metal parts and to reduce the time and labor needed for producing parts in quantity by metal smiths. Since then modern technology has made the metal smith basically extinct. The mould is made by making a pattern using wax or some other material that can be melted away. This wax pattern is dipped in refractory slurry and covered with stucco, which coats the wax pattern and forms a skin. This is dried and the process of dipping in the slurry, stuccoing and drying is repeated until a robust thickness is achieved.After this, the entire mould is placed in an oven and the wax is melted away.
