Caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) is a versatile alkali. It is a white solid ionic compound consisting of sodium cations Na+ and hydroxide anions OHâ??. Sodium hydroxide is a highly caustic base and alkali that decomposes proteins at ordinary ambient temperatures and may cause severe chemical burns.
Main Uses/ Industry :
" Caustic soda reacts with bauxite to dissolve aluminium-bearing minerals in the ore so that insoluble impurities can be separated. The purified alumina is then used to produce aluminium.
Caustic soda is commonly used as a reagent in chemical reactions.
Caustic soda is used in the saponification reaction to manufacture soap. In detergents, it is a part of the process of neutralisation of LAB.
Caustic soda solution is used in the exploration, production and processing of petroleum and natural gas. It is also used as an adsorbent for carbon dioxide in light petroleum fractions; a treatment step in removal of various sulphur compounds.

Caustic soda solution is used to process cotton and dye synthetic fibres such as nylon and polyester. Mercerising of fibre with sodium and hydroxide solution provides greater tensional strength and consistent lustre. It removes waxes and oils from the fibre to make it more receptive to bleaching and dying. In rayon it is used during the viscose process to extract cellulose from pulp.
Caustic soda solution is used in the treatment of water by regenerating the anion resin bed. It is used on a large scale in DM plants."

Sodium bicarbonate, regular or ordinary used on class B and C fires, was the first of the dry chemical agents developed. In the heat of a fire, it releases a cloud of carbon dioxide that smothers the fire. That is, the gas drives oxygen away from the fire, thus stopping the chemical reaction. This agent is not generally effective on class A fires because the agent is expended and the cloud of gas dissipates quickly, and if the fuel is still sufficiently hot, the fire starts up again. While liquid and gas fires do not usually store much heat in their fuel source, solid fires do. Sodium bicarbonate was very common in commercial kitchens before the advent of wet chemical agents, but now is falling out of favor as it is much less effective than wet chemical agents for class K fires, less effective than Purple-K for class B fires, and is ineffective on class A fires. White or blue in color.
