Peanuts also known as Groundnut or ArachisHypogaeais a very important legume crop grown in India. It is a major component of edible oil and vegetable protein. India is the second largest producer of peanuts in the world. Groundnut oil contributes to 25 per cent oil seed production in India. Currently the annual yield of Indian peanuts is 5-8 million tons and that of peanut oil is approximately 1.5 million tons.
India trades around 0.1 million ton of peanuts annually. Small quantity of peanuts gives an individual a boost of healthy fats, protein, fiber, micronutrients and bioactive components. Peanuts also comprise of optimum level of vitamin A, vitamin E, folate, magnesium, zinc, iron, calcium, and dietary fiber. The unique bioactive components that act as antioxidants help to prevent disease. Arginine that is high in peanuts can decrease blood pressure. Phytosterols present in peanuts are known to reduce cholesterol and are cancer-preventative. Flavonoids found in peanuts reduce inflammation.
75% of peanuts production is done during khariffseason and 25% during rabi season. Peanuts production is highly dependent on the amount of rainfall. This in turn affects the market prices.
