Lemongrass is native to tropical regions such as Africa, Asia, Southeast Asia, Australia, and Oceania and is one among the most popular essential oils used today for its effectiveness, health benefits, and a wide variety of applications. Lemongrass is one of approximately 55 other species of grasses in the Poaceae family of grasses. Of these multiple varieties, the two most popular ones are Cymbopogon citratus (West Indian Lemongrass) and Cymbopogon flexuosus (East Indian Lemongrass).Though both can be used to produce essential oils, the former is largely used for culinary purposes, whereas the latter is highly valued for its use in essential oils and perfumes.
Palmarosa is a perennial, sweet scented grass, 1.5-2.5 m in height that grows in the area northeast of Bombay and across the Himalayan Mountains to Nepal and to a lesser extent, Pakistan. It has long slender stems and terminal flowering tops. The grassy leaf from which the essential oil is derived is extremely fragrant and is extensively used in traditional medicines like Ayurveda for its therapeutic properties. Palmarosa is a member of the Lemongrass family, and was known as Indian Geranium Oil. It is still used in blends to extend the more expensive Rose oils.

The clove buds, stem and leaves, on steam distillation, yield a substantial amount of essential oil. The clove bud oil, derived from the dried buds by steam distillation, contains free eugenol, eugenol acetate and caryophyllene. The stem oil contains more free eugenal than the bud oil, besides eugenol acetate, in small quantity. The leaf oil contains much less of total eugenol than the bud oil and a very small quantity of eugenol acetate.
