A permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is a combination of coil winding in its stator core and permanent magnets in its rotor core.

It has a better power density than an induction motor. It features a permanent magnet rotor and windings on the stator, just like a brushless DC motor. However, the stator construction with windings designed to create a sinusoidal flux density in the machine's air gap is similar to that of an induction motor. Due to their advantages, permanent synchronous motors are a very popular solution in electrical drives. PMSM exhibits best performance because of its characteristics such as high power density, high efficiency, lower mass and lower moment of inertia.


PMSM Motor Construction And Working Opeartion
The construction of a PMSM includes a stator with three-phase windings and a rotor fitted with permanent magnets. The stator windings are typically arranged in a sinusoidal distribution to create a rotating magnetic field when energized with alternating current. Let us understand how a PMSM motor works.
â?¢ When three-phase alternating current is supplied to the stator windings, it creates a rotating magnetic field. The rotor, which contains permanent magnets, is attracted to the magnetic field produced by the stator windings. As a result, the rotor begins to rotate synchronously with the rotating magnetic field produced by the stator.
â?¢ The term "synchronous" in Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor refers to the fact that the rotor rotates at the same speed as the rotating magnetic field produced by the stator. This synchronous operation ensures efficient energy conversion and enables precise control of the motor's speed and torque.
â?¢ PMSMs are often controlled using sophisticated motor control algorithms, such as Field-Oriented Control (FOC) or Direct Torque Control (DTC). These control techniques allow for precise regulation of the motor's speed and torque, as well as smooth operation across a wide range of operating conditions.
