It increases the resistance of the plants to freezing and drought
NPK fertilizer is usually thought of as a chemical fertilizer, but npk applies to any soil amendment that supplies Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and K, Potassium, including organic fertilizers.
What is NPK?
An npk fertilizer is usually thought of as a chemical fertilizer, but npk applies to any soil amendment that supplies Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and K, Potassium, including organic fertilizers.
The numbers are always in the same order, and refer to the percentage of each element in the fertilizer.
Plants need nitrogen for leaf growth, phosphorus for root formation, stem growth, and fruiting, and potassium for flowering and plant immunity.
An organic npk fertilizer can be slow-releasing or fast-releasing. Many have both quick-releasing “labile” nutrients, and more “recalcitrant” nutrients that break down slowly and supply a steady stream of nutrients over a longer period.
Many organic npk fertilizers need soil organisms to break them down and release their nutrients, so they release more quickly when the soil is warm and the soil food web is at its most active. This is also when you get the most rapid plant growth, and your vegetables really need it.
It temporarily increases the soil pH, but over a long term the treated ground becomes more acidic than before upon nitrification of the ammonium.
It temporarily increases the soil pH, but over a long term the treated ground becomes moreacidic than before upon nitrification of the ammonium.
It is incompatible with alkaline chemicals because its ammonium ion is more likely to convert to ammonia in a high-pH environment. The average pH in solution is 7.5–8. The typical formulation is 18-46-0 (18% N, 46% P2O5, 0% K2O).
DAP can be used as a fire retardant. It lowers the combustion temperature of the material, decreases maximum weight loss rates, and causes an increase in the production of residue or char. These are important effects in fighting wildfires as lowering the pyrolysis temperature and increasing the amount of char formed reduces that amount of available fuel and can lead to the formation of a firebreak. It is the largest component of some popular commercial firefighting products.
DAP is also used as a yeast nutrient in wine making and brewing mead; as an additive in some brands of cigarettes purportedly as a nicotine enhancer; to prevent afterglow in matches, in purifying sugar; as a Flux for soldering tin, copper, zinc and brass; and to control precipitation of alkali-soluble and acid-insoluble colloidal dyes on wool.
Can be considered as near-neutral in its effect on soil pH and therefore can be used on soils that have a low pH without lowering further.

For use on perennial fruit crops (where soil incorporation of lime is difficult)
is a nitrogen fertilizer which contains equal parts of fast acting nitrate-nitrogen and longer lasting ammonium-nitrogen
Volatilization of nitrogen from CAN is negligible, therefore the timing of the applications is flexible
Calcium Ammonium Nitrate can be considered as near-neutral in its effect on soil pH - and therefore can be used on soils that have a low pH without lowering further. This also means it is most suitable for using on perennial fruit crops (where soil incorporation of lime is normally difficult to achieve).
CAN is a nitrogen fertilizer which contains equal parts of fast acting nitrate-nitrogen and longer lasting ammonium-nitrogen. This ensures a more continuous nitrogen supply to the crop and thus better efficiency of use, and also makes it suitable for unseasonal application during summer or winter.
Crops remove nutrients from soil. However, the soil is not an eternal supplier of nutrients required for crops growing on it. There is always a need to supplement the nutrient supply to crops through external sources. Excess usage of fertilizers has lead to imbalance of the available nutrients and has caused an increase in chemical loads in the soil and water resources both surface and groundwater directly resulting in loss of yield and revenue for the farmers.

The function of phosphorus in plants is very important. It helps a plant convert other nutrients into usable building blocks with which to grow. Phosphorus is one of the main three nutrients most commonly found in fertilizers and is the â??Pâ? in the NPK balance that is listed on fertilizers. Phosphorus is essential to a plantâ??s growth, but what does it mean if you have high phosphorus in your soil, or a phosphorus deficiency? Keep reading to learn more about the importance of phosphorus in plant growth.
There are many chemical fertilizers that can help you with replacing phosphorus and getting a good nutrient balance in your soil. When using chemical fertilizers, you will want to look for fertilizers that have a high â??Pâ? value (the second number in the fertilizer rating N-P-K).
Thereâ??s no understating the importance of phosphorus in plant growth. Without it, a plant simply cannot be healthy. The basic function of phosphorus makes it possible to have beautiful and abundant plants in our gardens

â?? 1. Although a major part of plant biomass is underground, we know little about the contribution of different species to root biomass in multispecies communities. We summarize studies on root distributions and plant responses to species-specific soil biota and formulate three hypotheses to explain how root responses may drive species coexistence and ecosystem productivity.
2. Recent studies suggest that root growth of some species may be stimulated in species mixtures compared with monocultures without hampering the growth of other species, leading to belowground overyielding. Further studies suggest that these responses are the result of reduced impairment of growth by species-specific plant pathogens that accumulate in monocultures.
3. First, we hypothesize that due to pathogen-constrained growth, monocultures are â??under rootedâ??, i.e. they do not have enough roots for optimal acquisition of nutrients. Although elevated root production in mixtures represents a cost to the plant, improved nutrition will eventually result in improved plant performance.
4. Second, due to the plant species specificity of the soil biotic communities, we suggest that plant species in mixtures develop an intransitive competitive network in which none of the species is competitively superior to all other species. Competitive intransitivity is proposed as a mechanism of species coexistence.

Calcium is a main constituent of the cell walls and membranes. When it is in short supply, cell division and the development of the growing point and root tips are affected. Calcium plays a key role in protecting the cell from toxins and in slowing the aging process. Adequate fruit calcium assists in longer storage life and helps stored fruit resist a range of breakdown conditions and rots including, internal breakdown, low temperature breakdown, water core, lenticel breakdown, as well as bitter pit.
Boron is needed for the movement of sugars within the plant and in the formation of new cells in growing points of shoots and roots. It is also associated with some of the functions of calcium. Boron affects pollination and the development of viable seeds which in turn affects the normal development of fruit, particularly in grapes and strawberries. A shortage of boron also directly causes cracking and distorted growth in fruit.

The Zinc Nutrient Initiative represents a new program with the overall goal of increasing the use of zinc in fertilizers. The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) has estimated that 50% of the worldâ??s agricultural lands are deficient in zinc.
Numerous other studies and findings have come out recently reconfirming the global and critical nature of the zinc deficiency problem, in crops and humans. The use of zinc fertilizers in zinc-deficient soils can increase crop productivity as well as the zinc nutritional status of the crops.
Zinc deficiency is probably the most common micronutrient deficiency in crops worldwide, resulting in substantial losses in crop yields and human nutritional health problems.
Deficiency in zinc might result in significant reduction in crop yields and quality. In fact, yield can even be reduced by over 20% before any visual symptoms of the deficiency occur!.
