A coconut husk normally contains 30% fibre and 70% pith. (1) Commonly known as coir, the coconut fibre from Sri Lanka is produced in two forms namely â??Brown fibreâ?? and â??White fibreâ??. Brown fibre is extracted from the mature brown coloured coconut husks while white fibre is extracted from the immature green husk. The long and coarse bristle fibres are separated using the traditional Ceylon Drum Technique which is a technique unique to Sri Lanka, used to extract the long fibre. (2) Brown coir extracted this way is used to create various eco-friendly products.
