Traditionally, for public areas like railway stations and bus-stands, a master slave configuration for clocks has been used. In these obsolete systems, the master clock is closely monitored by staff for its accuracy and the slave clocks are periodically synchronized with the master clock. The traditional master-slave configuration requires a wired communication network which has its own installation costs and maintenance cost, making the total capital cost and maintenance cost of the system much higher.
With the fall in cost of GPS hardware, GPS clocks nearly same as traditional clocks but have no network and/ or maintenance requirements. The clocks come with a RTC with battery back up which take care of any power outages and ensure a 24X7 accurate operation.
