Grade 304l, the low carbon version of 304, does not require post-weld annealing and so is extensively used in heavy gauge components (over about 6mm). Grade 304h with its higher carbon content finds application at elevated temperatures. Alloys 316 (uns s31600) and 316l (uns s31603) are molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steels, which are more resistant to general corrosion and pitting/crevice corrosion than the conventional chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steels such as alloy 304.
