Penetration Grade Bitumen is a standard bitumen usually used as a Paving Grade Bitumen essential for road construction and the production of asphalt pavements with superior properties, and it's very important once it bounds the aggregates and creates a unique cohesion and stability to the bituminous mix. This grade of Bitumen is mainly used in the manufacture of hot mix asphalt for bases and wearing courses. Grades of penetration bitumen: The most popular grades are; grades 40/50, 60/70, 80/100, 85/100, and 100/120. To grade the bitumen-based on viscosity BIS revised IS-73-1992 specifications (Viscosity at 60 C) and as such there are four grades VG-10, VG-20, VG-30 & VG-40. A few qualification tests like specific gravity, water content, ductility, loss on heating & fares breaking point were removed from IS:73-1992 as these tests do not have any relationship with the performance of the product. Viscosity Grade Bitumen is widely used in spraying applications such as surface-dressing and paving in very cold climates. It is also used to manufacture bitumen emulsion and modified bitumen products.
Cutback Bitumen is made by reducing the viscosity of and ordinary bitumen by adding mostly petroleum-type solvent. Cutback Bitumen is used because its viscosity is lower than that of neat asphalt and can thus be used in low-temperature applications. Cutbacks are divided into three classification: Slow Curing (SC) SC-70 SC-250 SC-800 SC-3000, Medium Curing (MC) MC-30 MC-70 MC-250 MC-800 MC-3000, Rapid Curing (RC) RC-70 RC-250 RC-800 RC-3000. Gilsonite is a natural, resinous hydrocarbon. This natural asphalt or Natural bitumen is similar to hard petroleum asphalt and is often called a natural asphalt, asphaltite, uintaite, or asphaltum. Gilsonite is soluble in aromatic and aliphatic solvents, as well as petroleum asphalt. Due to its unique compatibility, Gilsonite is frequently used to harden softer petroleum products. Gilsonite in mass is a shiny, black substance similar in appearance to the mineral obsidian. It is brittle and can be easily crushed into a dark brown powder. Gilsonite is found below the earth's surface in vertical veins or seams that are generally between two and six feet in width, but can be as wide as 28 feet. The veins are nearly parallel to each other and are oriented in a northwest to southeast direction. They extend many miles in length and as deep as 1500 feet. The vein will show up on the surface as a thin outcropping and gradually widen as it goes deeper. Due to the narrow mining face, Gilsonite is mined today, much like it was 50 or 100 years ago. The primary difference is that modern miners use pneumatic chipping hammers and mechanical hoists. 4
