1. Introduction: Brown fused aluminum oxide, otherwise known as Brown Fused Alumina or BFA, is produced through an electric arc furnace process. Brown fused aluminum oxide is both a hard (Mohs hardness 9) and tough material with high strength, making it an excellent abrasive grain raw material for applications such as blast media, sandpaper, grinding wheels and abrasive discs, rolls, belts and pads. Its thermal properties make it an excellent raw material for refractory applications, as well. Because Brown Fused Aluminum Oxide has a high bulk density and high hardness making it the perfect media for removing rust, mill scale, and surface contamination. The consistent particle size allows for a uniform surface finish and coverage. 2. Deep Processed BFA Calcined BFA: Heating to 1050°C greatly improves the purity, toughness, strength, and wear-resistance of abrasives. Primary application: vitrified grinding wheels. Blue-Fired BFA: While turning grain-color dark blue, firing at 1350°C achieves far greater toughness and strength, much lower iron content, a very low coefficient of thermal expansion, and excellent hydrophilicity, all of which increase grinding performance and accuracy. Primary applications: coated abrasives (paper, cloth and belts) and heavy-duty grinding wheels. Ceramic-Coated BFA: Ceramic coating improves purity and hydrophilicity, reduces dust, and achieves grain surfaces that have greater toughness, strength, and roughness, and that are also more uniform in particle size. A slow solidification process follows the fusion, to yield blocky crystals. The melting help in removing residual carbon , Strict control over Titania levels during the fusion process ensures optimum toughness of the grains. Then The cooled crude is further crushed, cleaned of magnetic impurities in high intensity magnetic separators and classified into narrow size fractions to suit the end use. Brown Fused Alumina is a tough, sharp abrasives which is highly suitable for grinding metals of high tensile strength. Its thermal properties make it an excellent material for use in the manufacture of Grinding wheels and refractory products. This material is also used in other applications like blasting and surface hardening.
