A sympathomimetic drug that stimulates beta adrenoceptors in the airways. It is used mainly as a bronchodilator to relieve constriction of the airways in attacks of asthma and to alleviate wheezing and breathlessness in bronchitis and emphysema. It also relaxes the uterus and can be used in obstetrics to prevent or delay premature labour. Terbutaline is available, on prescription only, as a metered-dose aerosol or as a powder for inhalation, as tablets, modified-release tablets, or a syrup for oral use, as a solution for use in a nebulizer or a ventilator, and as a solution for injection.
