Indigo is a blue dye, which comes from the indigo (neel) plant grown in India. It is among the oldest dyes to be used for textile dyeing and printing. Natural indigo is obtained by fermenting the leaves of various species of Indigof era, running off the liquor and oxidising it to precipitate the dye. The precipitated blue natural dye at the bottom is mixed with a strong base such as Sodium hydroxide and is then dried in the air to make the cake; which is subsequently dried & powdered. The powder is then mixed with various other substances to produce different shades.
