It is grown largely in the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka, and used primarily in South Indian cuisine. It has a low GI of 51. Compared to this, the popular Sona Masuri rice variety registers 72 as its GI. Higher GI foods are generally not recommended for consumption by diabetics. They can contribute to increase in blood sugar levels and make medical management of diabetes more intensive and sometimes challenging. Firm and intact grains of Sonam rice suggests its good quality. Its a non-basmati rice also called BPT rice. Parboiled rice with low moisture, the grains do not stick to each other! When it comes to Sona Masoori rice vs Basmati Rice, Sona Masoori is undoubtedly the winner. Sona Masoori is the unpolished rice and hence is more nutritious compared to polished basmati rice. It also contains less starch than basmati rice. HMT Rice is one more popular paddy variety which is almost equivalent to Sona Masoori. The grain looks even thinner than Sona Masoori and tastes also good. We have only white rice available in this variant.
