Product description: QT-PICO can be used to rapidly measure soil moisture in the upper layer, it can also work with extension rod to measure deep soil moisture. After calibration, it can measure soil salinity at the same time.
Principle

QT-PICO soil moisture and temperature meter is based on TDR (Time domain Reflectometry) technology. It can directly measure the dielectric constant of soil or other media. According to the relationship between the dielectric constant and soil moisture, soil water content can be derived from the output voltage.

When the meter is operating, it first produces 1GHz high frequency electromagnetic waves, then the waves transmit along the conductor and generate an electromagnetic field around the probe. When the waves reach the end of the conductor, they return to the source. The duration of transmission is between 10 ps and 2 ns. The meter is very sensitive and it can detect the time signal as short as 3 ps. The time sampling method makes soil moisture measurements become more accurate and convenient.

Principle

Using FDR (frequency domain reflectometry) principle, the sensor emits electromagnetic wave with a certain frequency, the waves transmit along the probe till they reach the bottom of the probe and return to the sensor, the output voltage is recorded. Because the dielectric constant of the soil usually depends on the soil moisture, the soil water content can be calculated according to the relationship between the output voltage and soil moisture.

QT-EQ15 Soil water potential meter

Principle

EQ15 equilibrium tensiometer consists of two parts: equilibrium sensor and moisture content sensor. The equilibrium sensor is made of a special material which owns two characteristics: stable relationship between water content and water potential, high water permeability. Good permeability can ensure water potential changes simultaneously with soil water content. Moisture content sensor measure the water content of equilibrium sensor all the time. Because the relationship between water content and water potential is known, soil water potential can be calculated based on soil water content. Moisture content sensor is fixed in the equilibrium sensor, thus the changes of ambient environment (Soil density, gravels, root systems, etc.) around the probe have no effect on the measurement results.

Comparison with traditional soil water potential meter

The current soil water potential meters on the market and their measuring principles have several shortcomings in some aspects, such as measurement accuracy, measurement range and stability in measurement. Apparently those soil water potential meters cannot completely meet usersâ?? requirements. The traditional tensiometer usually has a small measurement range (-0.8~0bar), and it can be used only in moist soil and damaged easily; Psychrometer can be heavily affected by the temperature change and its measurement accuracy is low and not suitable for outdoor use. Gypsum blocks has low measurement precision, low stability, and can get significantly affected by soil pH
