EN 590 Gas Oil is a 10 ppm (parts per million) sulphur content gas oil. It has a higher cetane number than A2 Class Gas Oil (another 10ppm sulphur content class of red diesel), making it better suited to internal combustion engines in off-road vehicles.

Diesel engines or compression ignition engines, rely on the temperature increase of compression, rather than on spark plugs, to achieve reliable ignition timing and combustion efficiency. As a result of their inherently higher compression ratio for a given power output, diesel engines are more fuel efficient than spark ignition engines. Compared with spark ignition automotive engines, diesel engines weigh more, generate more vibration and produce greater particulate or soot emissions.
