Rising Stem Gate Valve has threads on the outside of the valve body. The gate stem moves up when the valve opens. Rising stem valves are usually made of cast or forged steel, while non-rising stem valves are more commonly brass, bronze or cast iron.

If the handle is flush with the pipe (no stem exposed), the valve is closed. The valve opens if a large amount of the stem is exposed
