The research octane number (RON) of a fuel is determined with a laboratory test engine in which the onset of knocking is observed. It is known that branched-chain paraffins have a higher octane number than their straight-chain analogues, so that one of the major operations of a petroleum refinery is to convert straight-chain hydrocarbons to branched-chain alternatives. Arbitrarily, pure iso-octane (2,2,4-trimethylpentane) is accorded a research octane number of 100, while the straight-chain paraffin n-heptane is given an octane number of zero. Hence, a petrol sample with the same anti-knock quality as that of a mixture containing 90% iso-octane and 10% n-heptane is said to have a RON of 90. Petrol is made up of a mixture of mostly branched-chain paraffins, with suitable additives, to give a RON in the range 90�¢??100.
